Structural Materials Engineer

Role at ANSTO

Dr Zhiyang Wang is a Structural Materials Engineer with the Reactor System group, where he does research on nuclear materials under operational and extreme conditions for applications in current and next-generation (Gen IV) nuclear reactor systems. He applies his expertise in the field of materials science & engineering, and advanced characterisation to promote characterising and understanding the degradation of nuclear materials under relevant conditions, such as high-temperature exposure, creep-fatigue and radiation damage. He works in line with ANSTO’s strategic objectives to contribute to improving the capabilities of developing advanced materials for potential nuclear and other industrial applications.

Expertise

  • Microstructure-property-processing relationship analysis of nuclear materials.
  • Materials characterisation using advanced neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction/scattering techniques.
  • Materials design and performance prediction using thermodynamic (Thermo-Calc) calculations.
  • Actuation mechanisms in functional piezo-ceramics

Qualifications & Achievements

  • Post-Doctoral researcher at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNSW Sydney (2013-2015), and the Powder Diffraction beamline of the Australian Synchrotron (2015-2018)
  • PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Wollongong (2014

Affiliations

  • Adjunct Senior Lecturer, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW Sydney (2022-2023)
