Think Science! 2026: Bringing science skills together

A free, nationwide science competition for primary and secondary school students in Years 3 to 10, Think Science! encourages students to work as part of a team to perform an investigation using the Science Inquiry skills from the Australian Curriculum and document their process and findings in a video.  Over $10,000 in prizes are on offer for winning schools and students. 

We are excited to bring back the Think Science! competition in 2026.

What is Think Science!?

Engage your students in real-world science!
ANSTO’s Think Science! competition is an exciting opportunity for students to experience authentic scientific inquiry in a fun and creative way.

Why get involved?

  • Supports the Science Inquiry strand of the Australian Curriculum.
  • Encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Flexible and easy to integrate into existing lessons.

How it works:

  • Students work in teams of 2–4 to conduct a first-hand science investigation on a topic of their choice.
  • They document the inquiry process and showcase their findings in a short video:
    • Primary: 3–4 minutes
    • Secondary: 4–5 minutes
    • Videos must not exceed time limits.

Teacher Support:

  • ANSTO provides resources to help incorporate investigations and inquiry skills into your classroom.
  • No special equipment required – use what’s available in your school.

Key Benefits:

  • Promotes creativity and digital technology skills.
  • Open to schools nationwide – any State or Territory can participate.
  • Helps students see science as fun, innovative, and relevant.
  • Student can win individual prizes, as well as for their school.

Would you like to be part of Think Science! 2026?

Who can enter

School students in Years 3 to 10 from all States/Territories of Australia can enter Think Science!

Classes or student teams must be entered by a teacher.

If you are an individual student, tell your teacher about this event and ask them to register you and your team of 2 to 4 people.

Homeschool teams are welcome to register for Think Science! Homeschool entries will be eligible for student prizes.

Important Dates for 2026:

Registration opens: Monday 9th February 2026
Closing date for submission of entries: Friday 3rd July 2026
Winners announced during National Science Week (15th-23rd August 2026)
