Role at ANSTO
Dr Ryan Middleton is the current Acting Leader of the Human Health Research group which consists of a team of biologists, chemists and physicists who utilise nuclear science and technology to solve health challenges.
For his research activities, Ryan applies his knowledge of molecular biology to understand radiation impacts on biological systems in order to improve the clinical response to radiotherapy.
In addition to supporting other research projects aligned to Human Health's strategic goals, Ryan is leading his own research that is examining the infiltration of immune cells into the tumour microenvironment following Synchrotron Microbeam Radiation Therapy. In collaboration with St George Hospital and the Microbiome Research Centre, he is also studying the role that the microbiome plays in the development of disease and the response to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
