Role at ANSTO

Daniel Eriksson received his PhD from Uppsala University, Sweden, in 2009, in the field of macromolecular X-ray crystallography. Following this, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research fellow with Bostjan Kobe, University of Queensland, on the bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogenesis of humans and plants. In 2014, Daniel joined the Australian Synchrotron, a landmark research infrastructure facility operated by ANSTO, as a beamline scientist in the macromolecular crystallography beamline team. He has 5 years experience in this role, which includes supporting protein and small-molecule structural biology, as well as beamline development.

Daniels main role as a beamline Scientist is to service the structural biology community and Australian Synchrotron users, through beamline support, student education, and outreach activities. In addition, he maintains an active research profile through collaborative projects with predominantly University-based researchers and other aspects of synchrotron science.

During his professional life, Daniel has been involved in organising and presenting at multiple conferences, workshops, road shows, and community outreach activities. These include being the main organiser of the 1000th PDB symposium in 2015, serving on the organising committee of the Australasian Crystallography School in 2016, and a role in every synchrotron crystallography school since 2014. Additionally, he participates in public and professional outreach in the form of the popular Synchrotron Open Day events where the general public is invited to tour the facility; typically involving thousands of participants over course of a day. The professional equivalent are the Road Shows, where an ANSTO team visit university campus areas for talks and outreach.
