Role at ANSTO
Bernt Johannessen completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and later earned a PhD from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. He has been involved with X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and related techniques for over 20 years, both as a user and as a beamline scientist.
Bernt previously completed an internship at the Advanced Photon Source in the US, worked as a scientist at the Photon Factory in Japan, and is now a Senior Scientist and Beamline Responsible at the XAS Beamline in Melbourne.
His academic interests include Catalysis and Energy Storage for which XAS has emerged as an essential analysis tool. He is an honorary fellow at the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) at the University of Wollongong, Australia, and an Investigator on the GetCO2 ARC Centre of Excellence. Bernt also keeps academically active via conference participation, grant proposals, and student co-supervision.
