What's new in nuclear power technologies
It's ANSTO's role to keep Australia across the very latest developments in nuclear science and technology from around the world. Part of this responsibility is keeping us abreast of the latest developments in nuclear power technologies.

Samples - Far Infrared
Samples and techniques on the Far Infrared beamline at the Australian Synchrotron.
Small modular reactors can be built with Generation IV reactor designs
Small modular reactors can be built using Generation IV reactor technologies, that old the promise of considerably higher efficiency for decarbonised energy production and industrial heat co-generation.
Operations resumed at the Australian Synchrotron

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
At ANSTO we understand that diverse teams produce better outcomes – and we value the merit that a diverse perspective can bring to the quality and outcomes of our work, and the way we get the job done.
New low level waste storage technology enhances safety, access and efficiency
The Waste Management Services group at ANSTO is now using a new automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) that will enhance safety, access and efficiency.
Synchrotron techniques reveal amount of carbon captured in microscopic seams of deep-sea limestone
A collaboration of Australian scientists has used ANSTO’s Australian Synchrotron to measure the amount of carbon that is captured in microscopic seams of deep-sea limestone, which acts as a carbon sink.

Biological small angle X-ray scattering beamline (BioSAXS)
The Biological Small Angle X-ray Scattering beamline will be optimised for measuring small angle scattering of surfactants, nanoparticles, polymers, lipids, proteins and other biological macromolecules in solution. BioSAXS combines combine a state-of-the-art high-flux small angle scattering beamline with specialised in-line protein purification and preparation techniques for high-throughput protein analysis.

Federal grants for ANSTO expertise and infrastructure will benefit manufacturing and nuclear technologies
Three new federal grants were announced to support manufacturing and nuclear technologies.
Research finds possible key to long term COVID-19 symptoms
Researchers from La Trobe University have used the Australian Synchrotron to help identify a key mechanism in how SARS-CoV-2 damages lung tissue.
2019 Shorebirds Competition Summary and Results
From June to August we invited primary schools in Greater Sydney/Illawarra and Melbourne to participate in our 2019 Shorebirds Competition. Students in Years 3 to 6 were asked to create a public awareness poster for a threatened shorebird found in Australia.
Nuclear power technology explored
ANSTO shared expertise on next-generation reactors and nuclear power with sustainable energy experts at the Australian Academy of Science symposium in May.
Radon - the new pollution watchdog
Atmospheric scientists have developed a new technique to measures the naturally-occurring radioactive gas radon for use in accurately categorising the degree of atmospheric mixing.
Improved understanding of progression rates in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, and schizophrenia
New technique to improve global climate models
An investigation that set out to resolve some of the uncertainty in the sources and quantities of pollutants reaching Antarctica has produced a new experimental technique to identify and characterise recently terrestrially-influenced air reaching Antarctica.

Highlights - Aerosol Sampling
ANSTO has been tracking and publishing data on fine particle pollution from key sites around Australia, and internationally, for more than 20 years.
