Role at ANSTO

Dr Kelly Smart is an imaging scientist and neuropharmacologist in ANSTO's Health Research and Technology Group. Kelly leads projects using PET and SPECT imaging with small animal models to support the development of new radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosing and treating disease.

Kelly received her MSc in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto (2013) and PhD in Neuroscience from McGill University (2019). After completing postdoctoral training in PET image analysis at the Yale School of Medicine, she worked as an Independent Scientist and group leader at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Canada before joining ANSTO in early 2023. Her published work spans PET and MRI analysis, radiopharmaceutical development, neuroscience, and behaviour and has been supported by fellowships and project grants from the Fonds de recherche du Quebec – Santé and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. At ANSTO, Kelly's research focuses on nuclear medicine development and quantitative imaging in cancer diagnosis and theranostics.
