ANSTO High School Work Experience Program 2023
For over 10 years, ANSTO has successfully run a variety of quality Work Experience Programs for high school students.
Our 2022 Program was extremely successfully, being thoroughly enjoyed by two groups of very enthusiastic year 9 and 10 students. So, we are thrilled to be running a 2023 ANSTO Work Experience Program.
ANSTO Work Experience Programs

The ANSTO Work Experience Program is extensive, interactive and hands on! It offers students a rare opportunity to engage with world-class scientists, gain exposure to working laboratories and gain insights into pioneering nuclear science research at ANSTO.
In 2023, three different Work Experience Programs will be on offer to students, running across June and October for a total duration of 1 week each. Students are responsible for any transport, accommodation, and activities outside of work experience hours. Public Transport to ANSTO is available. ANSTO is also offering the opportunity to apply for up to $500 in travel funding to encourage regional and rural based students who may otherwise not be able to apply for the program.
Students will have the opportunity to apply for the following Work Experience Programs at ANSTO:
Engineering – ANSTO, Lucas Heights, NSW
Students engage with a variety of scientists involved in major mechanical and electrical engineering projects within nuclear science and technology at ANSTO. Students will also gain insights into ANSTO’s engineering design processes (e.g. CAD software). Approximately 8 spots are available.
Science (Women in STEM) - ANSTO, Lucas Heights, NSW
Focussed on female students interested in a career in nuclear science, students engage with scientists from ANSTO Nuclear Medicine (ANM), the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering (ACNS), the Centre for Accelerator Science (CAS), the Environmental Radioactivity Measurement Centre and more. Approximately 12 spots will be available.

The Australian Synchrotron – ANSTO, Clayton, VIC
Students engage with scientists at the Australian Synchrotron – the largest particle accelerator in the southern hemisphere and a major component of Australia’s science infrastructure. Students will engage in areas of both science and engineering at the Australian Synchrotron.
Approximately 6 spots will be available.

Application Process
The program is open to students in Years 9 – 12 from across Australia. Students must submit an online Application Form and explain in 250 words why they would like to complete an ANSTO Work Experience Program.
We encourage students to apply as soon as possible as there are limited spots available.
ANSTO is committed to diversity and inclusion so we encourage everyone to apply. Students can also apply for ANSTO travel funds (up to $500 per student, approximately 6 awards will be available).
